Joshua Royals, a Currituck High School graduating senior, will go to college with support from a scholarship fund established in 2012 at Outer Banks Community Foundation by Penny Leary-Smith and her sister Sharon Tunnel. Joshua was awarded a $1,000 renewable scholarship with a $4,000 potential benefit through the Ralph & Ida Lee Saunders Scholarship Fund.

Scholarships have been awarded to Currituck High School seniors through the Ralph & Ida Lee Saunders Scholarship Fund since 2013. Penny and Sharon created the fund to honor their parents, Ralph and Ida, a devoted couple who gave back to the community through their work, their church, and many organizations. When presenting the scholarship at Currituck High School’s Awards Night, Penny said, “My parents would be very proud.”

Joshua plans to attend East Carolina University in the fall and major in criminal justice, with a minor in environmental science and preservation.
