Manteo Rotary Starts New Scholarship Fund with OBCF

The Manteo Rotary Club has created a new scholarship endowment with the Outer Banks Community Foundation.

Seeded with generous, initial contributions from individual Rotarians, the endowment will grow over the years to provide academic assistance to Dare County students for generations to come.

“Our club has a long history of supporting Dare County high school graduates with college scholarships, and this new endowment ensures that tradition endures,” said Jason Sherwood, President of the Manteo Rotary Club. “The criteria we use to select scholarship recipients are based on need, achievement, character, and leadership potential. The selection process also involves interviews by a committee of Manteo Rotarians.”

Mr. Sherwood continued: “We are pleased to work with the Outer Banks Community Foundation in establishing this endowment fund.”

The new scholarship fund is structured as a perpetual endowment, which means that the principal of the fund will remain invested, while the earnings are awarded each year to worthy Dare County students in the form of college scholarships. The fund will be one of 50 scholarship endowments stewarded by the Community Foundation, and one of four managed in partnership with Manteo Rotary, alongside the Percy W. & Elizabeth G. Meekins Scholarship Fund, the FC Minton Fund, and the Kellogg Cuthrell Scholarship Fund.

“We are honored to partner again with the Manteo Rotary Club to provide scholarships for deserving Dare County students,” said Lorelei Costa, the Community Foundation’s Executive Director. “As the cost of college continues to rise precipitously each year, it is amazing to see generous leaders in our community step up to help our local students achieve their dreams and build their future.”

Rotary joins leaders from all continents, cultures, and occupations to exchange ideas and take action for communities around the world. The Rotary Club of Manteo was chartered in 1937 and is one of over 34,000 Rotary clubs worldwide. The club conducts the INSHORE SLAM Fishing Tournament to raise funds for scholarships and other projects that benefit our community. Manteo Rotary meets at 6:00 pm on Mondays at La Dolce Vita Restaurant in Manteo.

The Community Foundation manages 50 scholarship programs on behalf of families, churches, civic groups, nonprofits, and businesses across the Outer Banks. Anyone can establish a scholarship endowment with the Community Foundation, or contribute to one of our existing scholarship funds, including the Manteo Rotary Scholarship Fund. Since the organization’s inception in 1983, the Community Foundation has awarded more than $1.75 million in scholarships to over 1,400 Outer Banks students.
